I remember Dr. Anderson when I arrived in LA County after driving for four days from Albany NY to enter the one year PA Residency Program ( unfortunately now defunct) in 1992. Arnold Zigman took me to the emergency department office to introduce me to Dr. Anderson. He got up from his chair, shook my hand and said,” Welcome to the team son, I’m glad you’re here.” I replied ” Thank you sir, it’s an honor to be here.” I still remember it like it was yesterday and I knew by the look on his face and the way he shook my hand he meant exactly what he said. I knew then I had made the right decision to learn emergency medicine at USC Medical Center. I didn’t know much about him then but he had a presence about him, an aura of both strength and honesty. In that one instant after driving 3,000 miles to a strange land, being nervous and alone I actually felt I belonged there!
Thank you Dr Anderson for everything you did for emergency medicine guiding it from its infancy to a full fledged speciality and thank you for making a nervous kid feel welcome!!
